How much do I have to pay to get a transmission and oil gasket replaced on a 2002 dodge grand caravan?

my transmission and oil gaskets are leaking, and seeing that this was a hand-me-down type car, it was already kinda beat up. I don't want to risk going a 3 mile drive since the leak seems so bad. Any help would be nice. How much do I have to pay to get a transmission and oil gasket replaced on a 2002 dodge grand caravan?
The cost would depend on which gaskets or seals are leaking. There is more than one transmission and oil gasket. How much do I have to pay to get a transmission and oil gasket replaced on a 2002 dodge grand caravan?
why dont you call a couple places in your area ???

  • What transmission oil do i use for my 1999 VW Passat GLS 4 cylinder?

i bought a used car and i dont have a owners manualWhat transmission oil do i use for my 1999 VW Passat GLS 4 cylinder?
All wrong answers: you must obtain the fluid at your local VW-Audi dealership. It's a special fluid that runs between 14-22 per quart to purchase (depending upon dealership). Put the wrong the fluid in and you'll probably cause the transmission to shift oddly at best, at worst, destroy the internals.

Hope this helps, a car nut. What transmission oil do i use for my 1999 VW Passat GLS 4 cylinder?
Look on your transmission's dip stick. The type of transmission oil you need should be stamped on it.

If not when you go to buy transmission fluid go to an automotive parts house and ask one of the associates what type you need.

You can also purchase a manual there as well that covers types of oil and fluids as well as a lot of repairs up to and including engine rebuild.
call a local vdub dealer to find out the proper kind it could be one of two..

1- generic kind you could buy at any parts house

2- the good stuff only able to purchase from the dealer its synthetic type,

for your pocket books sake hope its the first one and never take it all out and replace it all new your dub will never run the same the bands are self adjusting in the trans and adjust to the fluid so if it is really thin as new fluid is the trans will not adjust back only as it thickens
    i believe it's Dexron III

VW only uses a long life antifreeze, Pentosin p/n: G0012000

Your local auto parts dealer should be able to look it up in a book or the local Honda dealer should have a parts dept. that could look it up.
you will need roughly 8 , with a little to spare. Get ready for a new transmission.
It will take up 4 1/4 quart.

On the '90 Dodge Omni 5-speed, where is the Transmission oil fill opening located ?

I cannot locate where to add or check trans oil level on the 5-speed manual transaxle of a 1990 Dodge Omni. Please be as specific and as detailed as possible. Thank you.On the '90 Dodge Omni 5-speed, where is the Transmission oil fill opening located ?
The transmission has a rubber plug (about 1'; in diameter) with a ';pull tab'; on it on the end of the trans-axle. If you turn your steering wheel all the way to the left, you should be able to look in between the front fender and the tire and see the end of the trans-axle and the plug. The rubber plug simply pulls out by hand. The correct fluid level is to the bottom of the rubber plug hole (parked on a level surface). If you need to add fluid, put it into this same hole, until the fluid begins to run back out. Then simply push the rubber plug back into the hole. IIRC, the trans-axle uses Chrysler automatic transmission fluid. HTH! Good Luck!!On the '90 Dodge Omni 5-speed, where is the Transmission oil fill opening located ?
    I can't remember exactly...but all manuals have a check/fill hole, and a drain.

The check is usually about halfway up the case and is a large bolt or plug, usually the same size as the drain. On your car it will be on the backside (towards the windshield) of the case, I think, and it will probably have to be on a lift to check it.

Be certain about what you put in there...some of the FWD manuals used regular Dexron ATF instead of gear oil like older manuals.
I agree with your first answerer. There's no way to check a standard transmission for the tranny oil level. He told you where to look to see if it has any. If you find out that it does need some, don't put more than 1/4 pint.
it is a plug that screws into the side of the tranny

the only way to check it is to lift the car and use a 3/8 inch rachet and remove the plug, then you stick you finger in the hole and see if you feel oil

It's True!!! you are not expected to check the fluid level on that model your mechanic is.

What type of transmission oil should i put in a kx 125?

Don't buy into that over priced oil at the shop. I raced the 07 baja 500 using castrol GTX 20- 50 in my tranny, as long as you change it often I have never had a problem. I have had problems using that over priced crap though. What type of transmission oil should i put in a kx 125?

Is it legal to leave 2 or 3 gallons of oil/transmission fluid in an open container on your driveway?

I call the police/Fire Department and asked them about my neighbor who has two containers of oil/transmission fluid in open containers for at least one week. They call me back and said they could not do anything about it because it has to be 55 gallons or more to be illegal. Does anyone know anything about this? I thought it would hurt the waste stream if this spilled. Is it legal to leave 2 or 3 gallons of oil/transmission fluid in an open container on your driveway?
It is stupid of your neighbor, but there is not much you can do. The only thing you can do is talk to your neighbor about it. Is it legal to leave 2 or 3 gallons of oil/transmission fluid in an open container on your driveway?
That small of an amount will do no harm to the environment unless pored straight into a stream. It is gets tipped over it will spread out and evaporate over a period of a weeks or months depending on the environment. .
it might not be illegal , but its not ethical. best to take it to recycle[auto parts store] or put it in sealed container.[milk jugs. laundry jugs] they will take if for free/ some people will buy it,
I DONT KNOW IF ITS ILLEGAL BUT ITS NOT SAFE KEEP IT SEALED ATLEAST

How many quarts of transmission oil?

how many quarts of transmission oil does a ford f150 automatic 1997 4.6 liter v8 need ? i just changed the filter. How many quarts of transmission oil?
have at least 6 qts. handy and put 4 in and then just start engine and let warm up and work the shift lever a few times and check the level and add as necessary. How many quarts of transmission oil?
    usualy about 5 to6
It should say in the owner's manual. If you are without one call your local Ford dealership and ask to talk to somebody in the garage and they'll be able to tell you in a second.
If you did not drain the torque convertor (there is a small plug on it) it will likely take 5 or 6 quarts. Dont fill it to the full mark until you get the transmission hot. It will expand close to a Quart with the total volume that is in the transmission (about 12 or 13 quarts) when at normal operating temperature. Dont overfill it.

  • How often transmission oil should be changed in a 04 mitsubishi lancer?

should change it every 30,000 miles, if its an automatic, if manual every 60,000( book probably says less often , but they want you to buy a new car)How often transmission oil should be changed in a 04 mitsubishi lancer?
check your maintenance schedule book. I believe the interval for transmission fluid change is scheduled at every 40,000 miles more or less or 64,000 km. The sooner you change, the better it is for the transmission. I change tranny oil for my 03 Lancer at every 40,000 miles. How often transmission oil should be changed in a 04 mitsubishi lancer?
    OWNERS MANUAL
    i will check your oil

Whats the difference between transmission oil and automatic transmission fluid?

A manual Transmission will use Gear oil or transmission fluid. and an automatic transmission will use Automatic transmission fluid. Gear oil is a very thick type of oil (engine oil is 30 weight and gear oil is 80 weight) that is thrown around inside the transmission when the gears are turning. Automatic transmission fluid is a Hydraulic fluid that is designed to be pumped and it operates several clutches band brakes inside the transmission. These fluids both provide cooling and lubrication to the transmission but are not interchangeable since they are very different in Viscosity and would harm the transmission if they are switchedWhats the difference between transmission oil and automatic transmission fluid?
Really it's only how you like to say it.

Most folks will tell you that ';fluid'; is what is used in an ';automatic'; transmission, and ';oil, or gear grease'; is what is used in a ';manual or standard'; transmission.Whats the difference between transmission oil and automatic transmission fluid?
These days they can be one in the same. Go by the detailed information in your specification pages in your manual. Tractor hydraulic (thin low viscosity) fluid is used in farm tractors to run the transmissions, hydraulic systems and the rear end final drives and planetary gears. Hows that for one type of oil. The diesel motors of coarse have entirely different oils for the crankcases. As you know in today's front wheel drive cars automatic transmission fluid circulates through the transmission and the differential ring and pinion. The same light fluid is used in standard transmissions to make them shift easier in cold climates and provide superior lubrication in hot weather.
no different, unless 1 of them is a manuel transmission, then it could take gear oil.

Wher could I find the cheapest place to make a change on oil transmission to a engine oil?

OKok... I messed up BIG TIME!!! and I'm looking for the cheapest place to help me out here, SOoo I put engine oil in the transmission place, and it was leaking like hell, You know why? B'c besides being on the wrong place I over filled it, but I've talked to some friends and I just wanted to know What can I do?Wher could I find the cheapest place to make a change on oil transmission to a engine oil?
drive to the most convenient place. have the fluid drained, and the transmission cleaned with a pumping system to cleanse out the oil (important!) and replace with pure transmission fluid.

Also, it sounds like the transmission is leaking. If there is a leak, have the leak fixed at a shop as soon as possible.

Many, many transmissions have been destroyed because owners did not have leaks repaired... Many!

It only takes one time with the transmission fluid level too low to make a transmission fail. It's much, much cheaper to have a leak fixed than to rebuild or replace the transmission!Wher could I find the cheapest place to make a change on oil transmission to a engine oil?
First, this a world wide site. Where do you live? Second, don't drive any more than you have too. You need a complete transmission flush to get the other oil out before there is some serious damage.
You can take it to a oil change place that does auto transmissions. You most likely have to make an appointment for this. You will also want one that does the power flush refill.

They will open up the lines to the transmission cooler and hook it to a machine. The machine will collect the old oil and replace it with the new oil. Then when the fluid starts coming out looking like new fluid, then you know all the old fluid is out and the new fluid is in.

    good luck.
Drain it, put it on level ground, find out how much it holds and fill it up again, it's not rocket surgery.
    Hopefully you didn't start the engine without oil in it or you're looking at bigger problems than just leaking oil. The transmission pan needs to be removed and the filter replaced and if you started the engine, it need to be flushed first then drained and refilled%26gt;
Take it to a transmission shop and have them change the transmission oil and filter. It is important that you don't drive the car there, but have it towed instead. If you try to drive it you can do sever mechanical damage to the transmission.

    Don't wait, do it now.

What type of engine oil & transmission fluid does a 93 mitsubishi mirage use?

For the oil, look on the cap,or sometimes all that information is on a sticker on the fan shroud. The dip stick on the tranny should have the type on it too, but it may be hard to read after all these years.

Call pep boys, they have books that will tell you.

How much is it for a transmission oil change on a S-10?

Manufacturers recommend a ATF flush every 100K miles because their maintenance schedule is calibrated for a 100K lifetime for the car.

To get your car to last 200K or more, you need to do the routine fluid changes far more often than the dealer recommends. The standard for a tranny flush is 2yrs / 30K miles.

However, before you do it - pull your tranny dipstick and inhale deeply. If it smells burnt you are probably already screwed, and a tranny flush could finish off your transmission by loosing up the sludge that is holding it all together. If that is the case, you might just want to drive it until it dies, and deal with the $2000 rebuild then. If the fluid smells ok - and still shows sign of its original pink color, then a flush is in order ASAP.How much is it for a transmission oil change on a S-10?
between 30-50 if u doit ur self and 100-150 if u take it somewhere i would just reccomend a feliter kit which u remove the pan and replace the filter and just replace the fuild loss usaly 6-10 quarts a flush can harm the tranny if it has never been flushed befor 75000

How can I remove oil stains from my garage floor and driveway?

Go to your auto parts store and get something like Ulttrasorb (made by Motlan) - which you sprinkle on oil or grease spills. It absorbs it all, if you leave it there a few days. Then just sweep it up. There are numerous products specifically for this application - and they all do a great job, and are cheap. They are essentially compounds of very absorbent materials such as dried clay. Note: To get the area 'extra clean,' after the largest part of the spill is absorbed, sweep up the dirty absorber you selected and put some fresh down. Now, use your foot to crush the absorber into smaller, finer granules. Leave that there for a day or two. The finer particles get deep into the cracks and crevices and really do the job!
I've tried tide soap and a stiff brush. Then when I've gotten up as much as I can I use muratic acid to get the rest of it. That's the same stuff they clean brick with. That may be a little extreme but it does a pretty good job. Just be careful and wear goggles and plastic gloves.
The best and cheapiest way is Cat litter any kind will work
    muratic acid
degreaser from stanley products. really good
I use Speedy Dri, or some derivative. Spread it on the stain. Then stand on the stain and grind in the Speedy dry with your feet. Sweep up the dust, most of the stain if not all of it will be gone. If not, then use muriatic acid as suggested in other answers. BE CAREFUL, it is not a chemical to be taken lightly!

Front of the engine has a tube with a small push in rubber plug to fill the oil.

And you fill the trans where you check it.I got a 1978 chevy G20, i need to know where i pour the engine and transmission oil, where are the openings at
the engine oil is filled by a hole in the valve cover on a van it should have a extision coming up to eye site above all of the junk. the cap is a twist on/ off like the rad cap. dont forget to check the oil level first. 1. Motor Oil

Engine off , pull out the dipstick clean it, put it back in and pull it out then check the level. it is marked for its level

    2 Tranny Oil

Engine running, warm, IN PARK, pull dipstick out , clean it a few times before reading the level. You'll know tranny oil it's redish in color (red when new) To fill the tranny use funnel directly in dipstick tube slowly pour oil in , little at at time keep checking the level Do Not over fill, if this happens leve the dipstick partly out Very little just to relive pressure, then take to a shop to have it looked at.

In 78 things were simple under the hood there is not to much to get confused.
go to advance auto or o reilly or other parts store. they will help you. Really!
Standing in front of the van with the hood open - on your left side - to the rear U will C a lever or hook that U pull out %26amp; will B the size of your little finger---THATS transmission fluid -- On the right side looking @ the rear of the van like U did 2 get 2 the trans fluid --U will C a Rubber plug the size of a silver dollar - IT should just pull off - thats the engine Oil ! I sure hopes its a van - because thats what what a G is.

Can anyone tell me how to change the transmission oil in my 1998 chevy cavalier?

The proper way would be to remove the transmission pan from below the transmission. It would also be a VERY GOOD idea to install a new transmission filter while the pan is removed. It can be a messy job so if there is a dependable transmission shop in your area take it there or call them and get an estimate. Or maybe your local Chevy dealer is having a special on transmission services, call them and get an estimate. If you do it yourself just get a transmission filter kit and a new transmission pan seal. And, of course, some transmission fluid! Hope this helps. Can anyone tell me how to change the transmission oil in my 1998 chevy cavalier?
i really wouldn't recommend you do it your self if you don't like to get your hands dirty...if you don't mind first put on a good pair of gloves, let the car cool off get a bucket and a wrench and under the car there is a cap that is twist-able usually in the front/middle of the car. put the bucket under the car and slowly twist off the cap but keep a distance because the oil can still be hot and can be harmful it made contact with eyes.

When do you have to change the transmission oil on a bmw 528i year 2000?

the car has 175,000 km on it and i have never changed it yetWhen do you have to change the transmission oil on a bmw 528i year 2000?
The BMW automatic transmissions use a ';permanent'; type automatic transmission fluid, (ATF). Unless your owner's manual says otherwise, you should change the ATF at 100,000 mile intervals; (161,000 Km) or at 10 year intervals, which ever comes first. The ';permanent'; type ATF is very expensive, but if you plan to keep the car for several more years, it should be done now and again at 325,000 Km.When do you have to change the transmission oil on a bmw 528i year 2000?
The 2000 528i uses a ';lifetime fill'; transmission fluid by Esso called LT 71141. It is roughly $28 per litre from your BMW dealership.

Although the manual and transmission pan itself indicates the fluid should never be changed, BMW has changed this recommendation on newer vehicles to 100,000 miles. Many discussion boards recommend an even shorter interval of 60,000 miles. The filter should be replaced as well. NEVER buy an aftermarket filter for your transmission or you WILL have strange noises and performance issues. Always buy the filter and o-ring from a BMW dealership and make sure it is stamped with ';FILTRAN'; on the casing. The fluid can be purchased much cheaper from a VW dealership. Just ask for the Lifetime Transmission fluid for a 2002 Jetta Auto.
I would ask a question on the following site

  • Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?

99 CHEVY CAMARO(SS) bought it two years ago and ive put in it 10,000 miles but have never checked or added transmission oil, What exactly do i need to do, how do i check it, does the oil have to be hot/cold, does it have to be on park, neutral, reverse, on level ground and for my car what oil should i add.Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?
Oil should be warm so check after driving for at least 15 minutes. Check on level ground with engine running and transmission in park and emergency brake on. Pull dip stick, wipe it off and reinsert fully. Remove within 2-3 seconds and check level. If need to add, do only a small amt at a time, as you do not want to overfill. For correct oil check your owners manual or ask at any auto parts store for correct fluid to use. some are universal and some are for GM cars only.Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?
First, go to a JiffyLube and let them check it for you, for free. Then go look in your owners manual and it will tell you how to do this on your own. Why you want to check it yourself when it is free elsewhere, and you don't even have to get out of the car or get your fingers dirty.
look on the dipstick, it will probably tell you it needs to be in neutural (set the park brake) with the vehicle warm
engine should be warmed up...run through all the gears including reverse...put in park or neutral and pull dipstick...wipe off and put back in..carefully dont force it...pull out and look...oil should be nice red not brown or burnt..go to any parts store and they will sell u dex gm oil/fluid.....some newer cars have no dipstick...fluid checked by plug on side of tranny...check with parts/service dept...they r happy to help...really
Run the engine to bring the temp up, run it through all the gears, park on level ground. With engine running and parking brake on, open the hood and remove dipstick, wipe off excess and return to tube. Remove dipstick again and note fluid level. If needed add fluid through dipstick tube until brought to FULL mark.

    Caution:

It is worse to have too much than not enough, in most cases.

On some vehicles, there is no dipstick, the owners' manual stating that the Dealer must perform this operation.
step one park on level ground step two put the car in park step three start the car step four check the transmission fluid
First of all, do not go to Jiffy Lube!!!!!!! they are specifically trained to change engine oil. drive the vehicle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, park the car on a level surface, then run through the gears and back to park. Most transmissions are checked in park hot some are checked in neutral, pull the dipstick and examine the fluid, it should be pink, red indicates older fluid, brown indicates old or overheated fluid or deteriorating tranny usually clutch material, black is burnt fluid and indicative of problems. clean off the fluid, examine the dipstick for the full/low markings and the check statement as to in park or neutral, if neutral, put on the parking brake and shift to neutral then slowly put in the dipstick completely until seated for a second or two and remove. the level should be on or near the full mark (DO NOT OVERFILL), the first low mark is usually one pint or half a quart. If low, make sure you add only the fluid recommended in the owners manual, unless the transmission has been overhauled then check the invoice to see what fluid was used. Late model vehicles have a wide variety of fluids and they do not mix.

    Transmission oil/filter change in a 1997 Escort?

I try to change my trans oil in my Escort but i have this cross member in the way.Do you have to remove that to get to a couple of bolts on the pan?Hope somebody knows.ThanksTransmission oil/filter change in a 1997 Escort?
Many vehicles have some piece that interferes with an easy task.

Some vehicles allow for this interference knowing that the engine can be lifted with a hydraulic jack or scissor jack. You do this by placing a wide thick piece of wood under the oil pan and jack or lift the engine up just far enough to get to those bolts.

This may or may not be the case with this model but it is essential on other models.

You'd think those slobs (Ford engineers) would stop throwing garbage together and then whine about poor sales and customer satisfaction.

    Good Luck!

How much it cost to change transmission oil of mazda millenia 1999?

what haapened if i dont chamge transmission oil for long time? How much it cost to change transmission oil of mazda millenia 1999?
it's a 1 hour job that's $85.00 - plus parts - fluid - under $200.00 - get done at transmission shop - not quick lube oil change placeHow much it cost to change transmission oil of mazda millenia 1999?
cost depends on what exactly you have done. a simple drain and refill will take about 5 qts of dex 3, which is about 4 bucks a qt. then the labor charge. the next step would be a drain, drop the pan, clean, then replace the filter/gasket, and refill. so add the cost of the trans filter kit. in both situations, only about half the fluid is changed, the rest stays in the torque converter. an actual flush, where a machine is hooked up to the transmission, and it power flushes it, would cost a lot more, but would do a much better job of changing out the fluid, because it would also get the fluid out of the torque converter. depending on which trans you have, total is either 8.5 or 7.8 us qts for complete flush and refill. leaving the fluid in there for a long time will kill the transmission. i change ours out yearly
do a transmission flush, it should not be over 200 dollars, you tranny will last longer
    from $500 to $1500.

Where would I fill the manual transmission oil on a 2000 Toyota Corolla?

Be specific.Where would I fill the manual transmission oil on a 2000 Toyota Corolla?
They don't have Transmissions, they are transaxels, so you will generally find the bolt previously mentioned on the drivers side below the motor... You use Gear oil and as also previously stated, rarely would have reason too, unless having it rebuilt and then they will do that for you.Where would I fill the manual transmission oil on a 2000 Toyota Corolla?
ok, on the bottom of the tranny, you will find the tranny oil pan, you will find a nut, take it out, drain all the fluid out, change the filter, and then fill it back up, i have a 5spd supra, and i use redline gear oil, and it is by far the best, but it is pricey, and yes you have to change tranny fluid, its just like a motor, if u dont change the oil, things tend to either wear out or blow up, so treat it like ur motor
Open the hood, look for the engine oil cap, remove cap, remove the dipstick, fill oil, replace dipstick and cap and you're done! Specific enough for you? Dip?
well on the manual trans oil pan...you need to take the bolt off and squirt the oil using a pump cost like 8 bucks.at pepboys..or using the bottle itself
most manual trannies are sealed and don't require adding fluid unless you have it repaired or rebuilt.

94 honda accord leaks transmission oil all of a sudden?

I parked in one spot, later on, when I came out %26amp; backed out of the parking space, i noticed small pool of transmission oil(redish color liquid).

I looked underneath, %26amp; noticed drops falling between front wheels, a few inches toward the passenger side from the middle. I also noticed trail of drops coming and going to my parking space. Nobody parks in this space but me so it's definitely coming from my car.

What could cause this? What could be the problem? Is it going to cost alot of money?

I can still drive but sometimes when I press the gas, It feels %26amp; hears like the middle of floor is shaking %26amp; the car doesn't want to accelerate for few seconds. But seems to go away once I am on freeway speed. My car is automatic.

Thanks everybody.94 honda accord leaks transmission oil all of a sudden?
You might have blown a seal. That happens when you add TOO MUCH transmission oil. I know because my best Budd's girl added some transmission oil without asking (thinking she's doing him a favor).

You need to go see a transmission specialist. Don't bother going to the dealer. They just farm out the transmission work and add another 10% before charging you.94 honda accord leaks transmission oil all of a sudden?
hopefully it is just an axle shaft seal leaking it probably can be fixed for less than $150.00 but that shaking is probably from low fluid if you keep driving it like that and it won,t take long at all you will buy a trans which starts at least 10 times that much
Had similar prob some time ago with a civic. It might cost you around 200 dollars depending of what caused it. Be sure to take it to a mechanic as soon as possible. If liquid dries up, it may cause you far more to fix it.

It is hard to say, till the mechanic opens it and finds out. You may end up paying just $50. If you are new customer to them, you might pay even less.
I use to be an Automotive Technician. 1st. Check the Transmission Oil with the engine running, Is this Vehicle an Automatic? I would then check the Power Steering Fluid with the Engine running as well. It's possible that you may have a Power Steering unit leaking and or Power Steering Hose. If Low on either, Don't drive at all !!!!! It will cause even more Serious Problems!!!!!
    thats cuz its a honda

some people i race with are telling me to use a heavier oil to keep my engine safe. what do you say?I have 2008 honda CRF the engine oil and transmission oil call for 10w30 is that what i should really use?
I think you would be better asking in the motorcycle section of the cars and transportation. but first you should re- read the instructions. engine oil and gear oil are 2 different oils. the 10w 30 are temperature levels -10 degrees to +30 ambient temperatures. you need a different visquosity for your gearbox.

there are a lot of good mechanics in the cars%26amp; transportation %26gt; motorcycles.. re post this question there.I have 2008 honda CRF the engine oil and transmission oil call for 10w30 is that what i should really use?
yes if u use a lower kind it will mess up ur gear box.

If you have an automatic..upgrade to Mobil 1 sythetic ATF

If you have a manual...upgrade to 75W-90 Mobil 1 Synthetic Hypoid oil...

They are BOTH fantastic, and yields real world results, not gimmicks.
if you dont know anything about cars i would suggest that you take it to a shop and have them do it because if not fone right, its gonna cost you alot more then $100 to have a tech to do it

How to perform a transmission oil flush?

how do you perform an automatic transmission oil flush on a 2004 honda accord v6?How to perform a transmission oil flush?
you have to drop the pan, change the filter install a pan gasket and bolt it back and pray it don't leak, unless you know what your doing, take it in and let them do it, ever spill tranny fluid? i have and it was a mess to clean

My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?

I have the 42 RE transmission, I think that it is a clogged vent or something, I have already put on a new pan, new gaskets, and have tried almost every transmission oil additive that would supposedly be a magic fix it. Any ideas on the vent or what else could be wrong? My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?
I think the vent theory isn't going to get you far. Silicone shouldn't be needed with a gasket. It is possible (seen it a lot) that you have a tiny crack in the actual transmission case, near the pan. These cracks can be hard to see %26amp; find, and I have seen plenty of seasoned techs chase their tails over problems like yours! You might look for an inexpensive leak detection kit; it comes with dye and a UV light, to see where it's leaking from.My Grand Cherokee's transmission oil pan will not keep a seal, any ideas on what can I do?
Short of dropping the pan again, there's nothing you can do.

    No ';magic bullet';.

Next time you drop the pan, take the time to fix the bolt holes in the pan.

Over tightening bolts tends to put dimples in the pan, and the remaining sealing surfaces can't make good contact with the botom of the tranny.

Use a block of wood and ball peen hammer to fix all the warped bolt holes in the pan.

Then, when tightening the bolts after reinstalling the pan, DON'T over tighten them.

They should be pretty snug, NOT tight.
Have you replaced the rear seal of the crank? You should have done this when the pan was dropped. It's a two piece round seal that normally wears 140k+ especially in jeeps. Seal needs to be oiled before install. Then reinstall the pan with clean/oil free surface on the bottom of block. I think you have to drop the front suspension to change seals on Cherokees.
before you put the seal in are you oiling up the seal lip first? if you don,t oil the seal then you will have a dry start up and it will tear up the seal. or are you getting the seal in straight?
Check with NPR '; Car Talk'; those two gentleman no everything about cars. Hope this helps.
try using a caulking compound on the outside to seal it......NEVER put anything inside a tranny except tranny fluid.
silicone .. drop the pan ... put silicone around it .. and slap it back on .... jeep sux .. ive owned a few .

  • How long should I wait until I change the transmission oil on a 2006 Scion Xb?

every 60 or 70,000 miles would be a good ideal. GOD Bless hope i helpedHow long should I wait until I change the transmission oil on a 2006 Scion Xb?
Robert's right, you want to change it every 60k. The fluid will break down over time due to the heat of the engine. You should really pay to go to a shop that can do a transmission flush. Essentially, you can get part of the transmission fluid drained by pulling down the pan but shops have a ';t-tech'; machine that allows them to completely flush all your old fluid out. It costs probably about $60 but will definitely help your car.How long should I wait until I change the transmission oil on a 2006 Scion Xb?
rarely do you have to change transition oil, it will last the life of the car. just make sure it maintains the recommended level

engine sump oil needs to be changed regular, i change engin oil in my car 3 times a year regardless yow many kilometers i do, that way im sure everything will be ok
Most older transmissions (auto) need tranny oil change every 30K miles. Some newer tranny can go as much as 100K miles. Your owners manual will say so.

If you can't find the info, just the dealer and ask you would like to know when. After all it is their job to change oil, at least they can tell you when you are due. Call few dealers as I've found some dealers will fib and will try to get you in earlier and not later.

    Good Luck...
check your owners manual it will be in there.

What kind of transmission oil should i use for a 2003 dodge neon?

use only atf-4 in it ,it has the needed additives to it to make it work right and to help it last longer, good luck. What kind of transmission oil should i use for a 2003 dodge neon?
Hmmmm Transmission Oil is not something you usually need to replentish often?

If you DO need that here it is: ATF+4庐 must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4庐.

Additionally, ATF+4 can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+.What kind of transmission oil should i use for a 2003 dodge neon?
Assuming you are talking about an automatic transmission, you need to use only ATF+3 or AFT+4 in a Chrysler product.

Use of the wrong fluid will cause transmission failure
    Chrysler ATF+4 or equivalent.
atf 3 or 4 just depends on what you can get your hands on, just dont mix

Is changing a transmission oil for new one safe?

Since i was a kid i have always heard that if you change a car's transmission fluid for new one it will mess it up,that is better to just change the oil filter and with a t-shirt to drop the oil in it and clean it for any dirt or particles and use it again...is this true,i think not. What do you think??Is changing a transmission oil for new one safe?
No, use the new oil, just use what ur manual says!Is changing a transmission oil for new one safe?
that,s not true at all ! always use new fluid and change the filter in the transmission and a new filter for the engine.
    not true

What type of transmission oil needed for a 2001 Ford Ranger Stick shift?

No- it is not Dexron, that is for automatic transmissions. Manual transmissions use gear oil- either 75w90 or 80w90 grade- either or, I don't think it really matters. What type of transmission oil needed for a 2001 Ford Ranger Stick shift?
dextron is what i have seen ion that gear box for years.

What does it mean when a mechanc from jiffy lubes says that your transmission oil looks like water?

there are no mechanics at jiffy lube.

actually they are not supposed to even say how the fluid looks, just to base it off of manufacturer recommendations. I might take it to a mechanic though to find out. What does it mean when a mechanc from jiffy lubes says that your transmission oil looks like water?
Could be water/coolant. Some auto transmissions oil is cooled through the side of the radiator. Possible something cracked and the two fluids mix. Or... the guy was in idiot %26amp; didn't know the difference between hot and cold fluid. Had a 93 ford SHO same thing happened. caught it too late had to repl trans $4500What does it mean when a mechanc from jiffy lubes says that your transmission oil looks like water?
Go to a real mechanic and have it checked. They work at Jiffy Lube because all they can do is change oil, and they are not that good at that simple task.
It doesn't mean anything. Service the transmission when the manufacturer dictates or get a second opinion by a licensed automotive tech.

    - Automotive apprentice
Transmission fluid can appear clear. Depends on the type of vehicle. For the person that said all tranny fluid is red, obviously they aren't car smart. I would get a second opinion too. Just go to any national chain, walk in the office and ask if someone can look at the fluid on the stick, assuming it's automatic. If it's a stick shift, then it should definately look clear as that takes either 80/90 or regular motor oil in some rare cases.
just means its real thin....have it checked pretty often for the next little while...... and the guy who said transmission fluid isnt dyed red must not have seen too much ATF. All the /ATF i have seen is red
It means the so called mechanic at Jiffy Lube is an idiot there is no way you transmission fluid can look like water it is dyed red about the only way it can look like water is because it is thin find a real mechanic
Jiffy lube does not employ mechanics. They are what we refer to as a GS, or general service technician. And several other names i cant mention here as well... They get paid to up sell preventive maintenance but do not always know what they are looking for. Sometimes clean tranny fluid will look transparent on certain dipsticks. If you ever have a question take it to a shop and get another opinion. Im not saying that Jiffy Lube is a bad place or anything but it is what it is, and it ceartainly is not a repair shop with trained mechanics. The good ones did their time and no longer work for that kind of pay.

Why not change transmission oil after 100,000 miles for the first time?

Why do people state that if you haven't changed your tranny oil in intervals every 30,000 miles and you decide to change at or after 100,000 miles it will ruin your tranny. Is there any bonified truth that if you change your tranny oil after 100,000 miles, your tranny will crap out? Please provide details in answer...Why not change transmission oil after 100,000 miles for the first time?
Here's the deal. On a lot of older vehicles, this ';myth'; was a fact. For some reason, it was especially true on Fords. Even more so on the old FMX trannies and C6 trannies. As a matter of fact, some C6es were bad about failing even by doing a tranny fluid change at the recommended intervals. Something about the type material they used to make clutch packs out of, without proper maintenance on the tranny, material byproduct would build up on the clutch packs. Fresh fluid would wash this material out and cause them to start slipping, sometimes even just crapping completely out all at once.

However, there has been great advances in technologies and materials used to build these things. From my experience, on trannies build in the last ten to fifteen years, this ';myth'; has become more and more rare to actually happen. Still, if you've allowed your tranny to go a hundred grand without proper maintenance, it's a crap shoot. After that many miles of ignoring your trannie, I don't believe you can actually blame a failure on maintenance that should have been done long ago.Why not change transmission oil after 100,000 miles for the first time?
Ok, it will not ruin your transmission to change it after 100,000. There is a popular myth that after 100,000 miles of neglect and abuse, that the fluid itself has so much of the friction material from the clutches in it that removing the fluid will remove the material that is keeping the trans working. This is garbage. The point of changing the fluid is to keep the valve body of the transmission clean and the clutches free of debris. Just change your fluid. You are actually prolonging the life of your transmission. Good Luck
    That is so incorrect.

Here's the deal. The tranny oil should have been changed every 30k miles. Some people don't change it and BY LUCK make it to 100K miles. Then they do a tranny oil swap for the first time at 100K miles. Then the tranny breaks down.

SO they go screaming that the OIL CHANGE caused the failure.

    NO !!!!!!!!!!!!

The first 100K mile on dirty oil caused extensive damage. At that point the tranny was already damage and was going to break down - it was only matter of time.

    Good Luck...
Ususally done around 50,000 miles. Oil get dirtly. The dirt whate cause the damage. That why the fittle is change. It can only stop so much before it stops up.

That not rules that say the transmission die if you change it at 100,000 miles. Some will die if you service it or not. Because the dirt was a seal. If the clutches don't get oil at the proper presurer then they will slip. This slipping wear down the clutchs adding to the dirt. Car that are HOT ROTed usely go down hill with a build-up slided and burn oil. They need service more often.
as the atf ages it develops a vanishing capability. this build up on the clutch packs and every where else. if you replace the fluid, you will replenish some of the detergents in that fluid. this will give the fluid a capability to wash away the varnish on the clutches increasing the clearances in them giving you the slipping issue. it is not a myth at all. i have seen it happen.

  • Where is the Transmission oil go?

Ok so I i have 1995 VW Jetta III.

Few things I need to know.

Where does the Transmission oil/fluid go and how to check how much there is left?

Is there like a site that shows it in Pictures or something because I can't find it in the manual.Where is the Transmission oil go?
Manual transmission don't have a easy nor convenient way to check or fill the oil. This pretty much universal.

Automatics have a dip stick (usually much longer than engine oil dipsticks). You fill the transmission oil using the dip stick tube. YES dip stick tube.

BUT I own a 2000 Audi A4 (auto) and this car had NO automatic tranny dip stick. It is sealed. The manual says ';oil is good for the life of the engine';. Then recently they ';clarified'; the life of the engine is 100K miles !!! What are they nuts !!

The VW Jetta and Audi A4 are very similar. But yours is 95. I would go buy a cheap repair manual if I was you. You can easily screw things up on the VW/Audi (they are complex beyond necessity).

Good Luck.Where is the Transmission oil go?
sorry it is a sealed tramnsission, and with out special tool you cant. You can get to it under the car but its best to take it to a VW specialist. google it and you can find were it is, but it is not worth the time.
what type manual do you have? Go to advanced auto and look in the manuals there, there will be a diagram. if not, it may be that it's ';supposed'; to be a dealer only serviced item so they don't want to tell you.

You'll be looking for a Chilton's shop manual. They also have them at the public library.

I did find one website that said it's a plug on the side of the transmission underneath the car. Try that.
there should be a yellow dip stick that is in your engine. you pull that out, wipe it off and put it back in. take it out and check where the oil level is. as far as putting in the oil there should be a spot on your engine that you can open, it should even say oil on it. good luck

Where exactly the automatic Transmission oil filter in my 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS?

The Transmission got oil pan on the side toward the engine fan not at the bottom like any other auto transmission.Where exactly the automatic Transmission oil filter in my 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS?
Your vehicle actually has 2 trans filters. One is inside the pan which is mounted vertically. The other is a spin on type filter that is located on top of the trans case. The set up of your trans pan is not unusual, several other foreign cars (i.e. Mitsubishi) have this.Where exactly the automatic Transmission oil filter in my 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS?
Your transmission filter is a long life filter and is located between the transmission case and the converter housing. It is a very involved process to have to get that filter out. The car does not have a bottom oil pan for the tranny. It may be accessible through the valve body pan on the side but I am not 100% sure about that last part.

Only some Elantras have the 2 filter set up. in Canada they were from 00-01 model years. After that it was deleted from production.
well that will be a first for me... oil pan most are on the bottom of the transmisson so if you have a pan on the side winders how it holds oil but i guess that it... all the ones ive seen and removed have been about a foot square and on the bottom
the filter for most automatic transmissions is in the transmission oilpan, which is located on the bottom of the transmission.

Where is the dipstick for the transmission oil?

the car is a toyota lucida estima 2.2 diesel automatic, year 90 to 91. it is under the seat but which is the engine oil and which is the transmission oilWhere is the dipstick for the transmission oil?
the oil dip stic is 11'; long the trany dip stic is roughly 8';-9'; long and is located on the drivers side under hood next to the stearing collom yolk '; witch looks like 2 u shaped peaces of metal with a rubber boot around itWhere is the dipstick for the transmission oil?
seriously, if your not sure you should take it to a garage, it's a knightmare if you drain the wrong one, i was a dummy and messed up and it cost me a fair bit to sort.

If you really wanna do it get a manual specific to your car, Haynes is a good one
if you have a user handbook look in there it should tell you.
if the transmission is auto it will have a dip stick which you should check with the engine running gears in park dip stick will have hot cold levels

if it is a manual it will have a level plug half way up the side of the gearbox this is topped up until oil drips out of level plug,or you can put your finger in the hole [engine not running]and you should be able to feel oil, thats o.k.
Look up the exhaust pipe when the engine is running and if you look hard enough you may just be a total IDIOT. thanks for the points.
I dont know, where is he??

it's easy enough to change it but you do need a couple of special tools to fill it back up to the correct level, these trannys don't have a dipstick anymore,

Look at this forum site for LX's it will tell you what you need for tools and how to use it, the pictures have been deleted but the links for the tools are still there and they work.

sounds like cracked heads to me; definitely a serious problem, you may even have to have the engine replaced, the longer you drive it like this the more damage it will cause.

the tranny will slip if it's 3 qts. low and eventually burn up.What are possible damages caused by running Ford F-550 transmission without 3 quarts of transmission oil ?
You have a series of clutches in any automatic transmission,if you have run a long distance without fluid, you stand a good chance of having burnt the clutches in the transmission. This will lead to slipping and over heating....top the fluid level up and check for leaks and then roadtest to see what the performance is like.

  • Transmission oil?

How often do you change your transmission oil?Transmission oil?
Most manufacturers recomend changing your transmission fluid every 30.000 miles but that varies by make and model check your owners manual it should say it in there check the service manual part of it....

    Good luck...Transmission oil?
Automatic transmission fluid - see your owners manual - it varies depending of vehicle, and type of use.

For automatic transmission fluid, if it has a slightly burnt smell (like toast); change fluid and filter immediately.

Manual transmission - 100K miles or so.
If you buy a used car with more than 50k miles you should change it and get the box flushed through, should cost around $100-150 but will be worth it.

For a new or newer car follow the handbook (or check with the manufacturer's website online)
I think its every 20,000 miles
when the color turns from red to brownish red.

I have a little leak of transmission oil, suspecting it occurring in the gasket.?

Is it safe to my tranmission for using the sealing agent of transmission oil leakage in the market?

Thanks.I have a little leak of transmission oil, suspecting it occurring in the gasket.?
DO NOT seal any transmission gasket with sealant.I have a little leak of transmission oil, suspecting it occurring in the gasket.?
Well from experience I had a leak in my gasket on my 2000 celica gt but the mechanic told me it was not neccesary. I later found out that it was true unless your car is leaking a lot of fluid. Dont change it i repeat dont change it. It will cost you around 300 dollars depending on your car
maybe but why not use opportunity to change filter and fluid,,,getting new gasket in the possess
If it's just an oil pan gasket leaking, it is easy and inexpensive to fix. If it's a seal leaking, that repair can get expensive. I personally have never used the stop leak products, but I think if you use them, it should only be for a temporary repair.

What type of transmission oil should I use for my Suzuki 1997 rmx 2stroke?

two stroke transmission oil. You can use car engine oil, but if it has friction modifiers, your clutch may slip.

I need to find Car Transmission Oil Comprable to V Twin Motorclycle Trasmition Transmission oil?

why? are you looking for fluid for your car or for your bike?I need to find Car Transmission Oil Comprable to V Twin Motorclycle Trasmition Transmission oil?
If you're desperate, then a 15W-40 diesel engine oil would be a somewhat close substitute to the motorcycle oil. The biggest difference between the motorcycle oil and normal engine oil is that the motorcycle oil does not have anti-friction additives. If an oil with anti-friction additives is used in a motorcycle, since motorcycles often share their engine oil with their transmission, those additives could cause the clutch to slip when it is engaged. A diesel engine oil doesn't have anti-friction additives in it either.I need to find Car Transmission Oil Comprable to V Twin Motorclycle Trasmition Transmission oil?

Where can i change my transmission oil&filter in the london ontario area?

a place thats you recommend me. considering price, service, and so on.

its a mazda protege 2003Where can i change my transmission oil%26amp;filter in the london ontario area?
That cost about 80.00 and try calling around to the smaller garages bec their usually the cheapest.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd stay from the big transmission shops.Where can i change my transmission oil%26amp;filter in the london ontario area?
    How about on the Bridge?
Why don't you do it yourself. It is as simple as removing the transmission oil pan at the underneath of the car, undo the screws that hold the fluid filter, and refill the transsmission fluid from the transmission dipstick hole.

Where is the transmission oil filler on my 99 altima manual?

it has a leak and I need to put some in but can't find where to put it because in my manual it's for a automaticWhere is the transmission oil filler on my 99 altima manual?
Can't say exactly off top of head but the check/fill will be the exact-looking plug as the drain. Locate the drain %26amp; then find the exact plug (prob on front or rear) somewhere near the upper middle area. Without a pit or hoist it may be difficult to do on your own.

PS-On that vehicle it is probably an allen wrench.Where is the transmission oil filler on my 99 altima manual?
I do not know where a transmission oil filler is: but on the dip sttick there should be writing on it that says oil. the other dipstick should have transmission fliud on it.(GET SECOMND OPINION FROM A MECHANIC BEFORE DOING THIS) But if you are trying to lubricate you clutch :pour the fluid in the gas tank. I seen my dad do that to his Nissan Stanza van: it was a four speed.
manuals have a plug on the side, like a rear end
Its usually a plug w a hex outside or a hex inside that will be 3-4 inches up from the bottom of the trans. you can probably only find it from under the car - it may be on the back of the engine/trans assy. you remove the plug and fill to the bottom of the hole with the car level. if it is on the front you may be able to access it from the top. you will either need a funnel and some hose - or a little pump (sold at auto parts stores) that screws on to the oil bottle.

first jack the car up to a good height and place two safety stands under the frame then lower the car on the stands making sure it is secure, since this is a messy job put some cardboard under the transmission, loosen the bolts and remove but leave at least two of them in place until you can drain as much fluid as possible, now remove the last two bolts and remove the pan, wash the pan out with some var sol and wipe clean make sure you remove all the old gasket from the pan and transmission, remove the old filter and replace with a new one,put the new gasket on the pan and and replace it to the transmission, put all the bolts in and tightened by hand, then tightened all the bolts equally but not over tight.lower the car full the transmission with the proper fluid, start the car and check for leaks.after Driving the car check to make sure there is no leaks and re tightened the bolts if necessary.good luck
You have to drop the trans. pan on that, it is a messy job.

Take the pan completely off wash it thoroughly and change the filter, the filter should be provided in the same kit with the pan gasket, and make SURE that you also change the ';o'; ring provided.
Get a manual first. It will tell you how to do it exactly. Changed my tranny fluid on 3 series. Check out bavauto.com for parts.

Can you put a quart of Transmission oil with your oil to clean out gunk inside engine, is this true?

A mechanic I worked with told me, if you mix 1 quart of tranny oil with the rest of the quarts of oil when changing, it would clean out gunk and dirt in engine, I am wondering if this is true and if not would it harm engine. Can you put a quart of Transmission oil with your oil to clean out gunk inside engine, is this true?
No problem if you used it to flush the crankcase just prior to oilchanging. The stuff marketed for flushing engines is much thinner than ATF ( Mechanic's Engine Flush) and is more effective in cutting sludge and other crud to drain out of your engine- and cheaper than ATF. A 5 minute flush with ATF is harmless. Just don't put the engine under load with either of those solvents.

If ATF was so bad, transmissions wouldn't last a week running it under pressure over gears, bands, and bearings, and a few hundred degrees F temperature. Can you put a quart of Transmission oil with your oil to clean out gunk inside engine, is this true?
Well, Mobile who sells both oil and transmission fluid answers the question this way:

    Question:

Does Inadvertently Adding Transmission Fluid to Oil Cause Problems?

What happens if you accidentally add Mobil 1 synthetic transmission multi-vehicle formula to a car that has Mobil 1 oil? Will I screw up the engine? I accidentally added one quart to my car.

    -- Kenneth Pettiford, Pomona, CA

    Answer:

It is unlikely that you will cause any damage with this mistake, but since the transmission fluid is a light viscosity, you need to check your oil level. We suggest you change the oil as soon as you get a chance just to be on the safe side.
thats a lot of bull pappy-maybe back in the late 40-S or early 50-S they messed around with that/ now with hi detergent oil and unleaded gas and the laser guided computer built engines that type of stuff will dilute your oil and damage your engine(not enough viscosity and lubricant in trans oil for an engine
Used ot do that to clean the dust out of our old bombers (circle track).ATF has a high detergent but is very bad for your bearings. We would run the motor till warm then drain. Our street cars didn't get misused like that.ATF is a straight 5 wt.Your better off with a product that is made to clean your oil journals.

Has anyone ever changed the transmission oil filter on a 05 Nissan Sentra S 1.8?

I own this car and I tried changing it's automatic transmission oil filter. I was able to drain and remove the pan. I got all the bolts out of the filter, except for one. This one bolt was near the driver's side. I could spin it clockwise or counter-clock wise, but it didn't seem to loosen or tighten. I took it to a jiffy lube, and they too were unable to remove the filter, due to the same bolt. Can anyone tell me, how to remove this bolt?Has anyone ever changed the transmission oil filter on a 05 Nissan Sentra S 1.8?
WOW. that bolt has a 10mm nut and washer on top of the valve body. That nut is just spining. I have to worry about just why you thought you needed to change the filter screen. Many Sentras get by with just regular trans drain and fill. DRIP drip DRIP Good LuckHas anyone ever changed the transmission oil filter on a 05 Nissan Sentra S 1.8?
How bad can it be to go through all that trouble,if your tranny has a problem and it has to be removed then you can take it out, otherwise I would not bother about it,just change the fluid.

  • Can you tell automatic transmission oil is bad?

my auto tech guy did a tranny service today and said the oil was fine. can you tell red colored tranny oil is fine by smell and visual? Can you tell automatic transmission oil is bad?
Bad oil will smell BURNED, like putting a match to a cork.

However, you can never really tell the condition of a trans oil by its color....you can tell if it's really bad, but you can't tell if it is molecularly sound just by looking at it.

Same for engine oil. Color alone is nothing to rely on. You need an oil analysis to see what's up and if the oil is fatigued.

I'd go by mileage, not color. Can you tell automatic transmission oil is bad?
Take out the dip stick and put some oil from it on your fingers.

You can smell if the oil is burnt or not fresh any more.

If you are brave enough, You can also taste a little, ( DO NOT SWALLOW ) , and you will taste the burnt oil or if it is fresh.

When servicing an auto trans you need to drop the oilpan to change filters or make any adjustment, so I don,t know if your man serviced it or what. He may have said that it doesn't need doing doing yet.!
Its going to smell worse than usual and the color is going to be more brownish than red.
Check for cunks of clutch luiner in it and smell to see if it smells burnt.

When changing the engine and transmission oil on a car. should you change the air filter as well?

my car has 82,000 miles on it. i need to get a tune up on it. don't have enough money. so was wondering if the air filter is still good. do i really need to change. When changing the engine and transmission oil on a car. should you change the air filter as well?
Air filter life expectancy can vary from over 20k miles if you drive in areas with clean air to as little as 3k miles if you operate in dusty desert areas.

    It is simply a question of ';How dirty is it?';

I use the ? can I see light through it ? as the best guide if the vehicle does not have an air filter monitor installed. When changing the engine and transmission oil on a car. should you change the air filter as well?
you're supposed to change the oil every 3,000 miles or so. the air filter doesn't need replacement nearly that often. I usually replace mine every 3 oil changes.
    If it is dirty.
    why not

How do I fix a 1995 Dodge Avenger transmission oil that has a leaking problem?

Either an input or output shaft seal, or a pan gasket is leaking. Replace the guilty gasket or seal. How do I fix a 1995 Dodge Avenger transmission oil that has a leaking problem?
see if you can narrow it down a little as to where its leaking from and then if you can you can find out what it needs to repair it,those cars was famous for leaking around the pan gasket, and front seal,if its the front seal it will run down and make you think its the pan gasket so wipe it off real good and see if you can get it to leak so you can see where its coming from,if its the front seal the transmission will have to be removed to replace it,if its the pan gasket or any other seal it should be able to be repaired while the transmission is still in the car, good luck.

ill tell you this, the books i have used in a shop for 15 years now all say about the same thing. up until 1995 you can use either 1030 or 1040, the latter is better for more freeway driving. '96 changed to a fluid that is just better to get from the dealer. if you use the 80w, you will feel a difference, more difficult to shift i would just bet. What transmission oil to use in my civic EH9 saloon 92-95 manual?
either use 10/30 or your honda MTF . do not put 80w in your vehicle , won't be shifting too easily .

A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?

By Changing your transmission oil and filter ,gasket every years will help the transmission last longer? How much would you think it will be to change the transmission oil and filter ,gasket at the dealership? The Vechiles is a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 with 105k miles, It never had the transmission filter change never!A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
Some newer cars don't need to have the transmission fluid changed ever, however on an american car I suggest you do it right away. If you do it yourself the kit will cost about $50 or so at an auto parts store but I suggest you buy the kit at a dealer (some autoparts stores have very cheap gaskets and will probably leak transmission fluid) hope this helps.A quick Question about transmission oil and filter ,gasket?
Trans oil should be changed every 30,000 miles Transmission parts,as any working device wears with age. These small particles are filtered out by the screen as does an oil filter does for an engine. Also the oils lubricating qualities break down over time. Ideally when you change the trans oil they should drill %26amp; tap the converter with a 1/8 pipe plug. Over half of the oil retained in the converter.
ideal trans fluid and filter change is anywhere between 40k-65k. and no, changing it wont cause damage, however, NEVER attempt a trans flush as it might damage your trans internally due to the high pressure process it undergoes during the process, chances are higher in high mileage engines. for fluid capacity and filter exactness, go to your local auto part store and tell them your vehicles specification (i.e., year, make, model, type of trans, 2wd? 4wd?).
tranny service depending on area usually runs around 198.67 thats what we charge, now if you've never flushed trans don't do it, tranny fluid is basically a heavy duty cleaner and if you have years of build up it could be holding things together and flushing the stuff out will make things fall apart. but you should have filter replaced, about every year or 15k miles

Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?

My boyfriend is changing the oil on our 99 Pontiac Montana and he's asking if there is a sealant for the gasket on the transmission oil pan?Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?
Just use the gasket and make sure its bolted in tightly and you're good to go.Sealant for gasket on transmission oil pan?
Was their sealant when he dropped the pan or was it just a gasket? Almost all manufactures don't use sealant they use gasket's and they fit dry and they need torqued to the correct spec. Over tightening will cause leaks just as bad as under tightening.
I agree with ';CJ 78'; - just the gasket!!!!

Cj 78 gets a thumbs up from me!!!

How much would a tune up and transmission oil change cost?

On a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with 32,354 miles V8 engine.

ThanksHow much would a tune up and transmission oil change cost?
A friend has a car, same as yours, and, they were told, that they didn't need a tune up, till 100 thousand miles. As for the transmission oil change, they did have that done, but, now, they wish, they hadn't, cause, now, the transmission, has all kinds of problems, as well as it slips, also. It was fine, before, the transmission oil change. No problems, what so ever. So, if your transmission, is actually working fine, I wouldn't worry about it, for now. If a problem, should arise, deal with it, then. But, if you want the tune up, and, the transmission oil change, your best bet, would be to check out several different places, and get their prices, and, go from there. But, I wouldn't worry about it, if it is working, the way it should. Same goes for the tune up. You shouldn't need one, till 100 thousand miles. It should be good till then. When things start to be messed with, when, in all realality, everything is working well, that is when the trouble starts. Like the transmission problems. How much would a tune up and transmission oil change cost?
Your best bet is to call around to a few local shops. An oil change should be around $20-30 and a transmission flush can be a little costly at times depending on the type of transmission. This is due to the diffifculty of getting to the filter. Some filters cant even be changed. But you should be able to get both done for less than $100
I dont think you need a tune up on the 4.6 V8 untill 100,000 miles.

The transmission takes 17 quarts of fluid if it is flushed, about 10 if not.

However, you should do the proper thing and take the car to a place like AAMCO, and have them flush it out properly and change the filter for like $90 bucks, maybe a little more.

Proper maintanance, and the car will last a while.

    Good Luck!
the plugs on those are kinda of a pain and prob not even supposed to be changed until at least 60 k your looking at about 80 to 100 for a good tranny service with a flush not just a filter change.the motor tune up should be checking things out like air filter belts and fluid levals
depends on what shop you call i wouldnt mess with the transmission yet maybe 100,000 miles an dshouldnt need anything but spark plugs which anyone can replace but if you must just cal three shops and ask how much
my mechanic does the oil change for 29.99 that covers just about all fluids and even rotates the tires.
my mechanic only charges bout $55 for both. the shop a lil more.

How to change transmission oil for Toyota Camry 2002 XLE?

Secondly, how to pour the fresh trasmission oil into the transmission ?

ThanksHow to change transmission oil for Toyota Camry 2002 XLE?
Is it stick shift or automatic transmission? Stick? you are better off to go to a mechanic. Automatic,1st, jack the front of the car and use a ramp if you have one, then you'll see a bolt on the transmission oil pan and loosen it but be sure to have a container wating for the fluid that would be flushed out (old tranny flud) change the filter as well. Then pour your new tranny fluid through the hole where your tranny fluid dip stick is inserted, use a funnel with extension. And you'll need a second person for the 3rd part. 3rd part would be checking its level and dip stick should indicate it but you must put the tranny in gear (D) to check the level. So you need another person to put it in gear while he is stepping on the brake. How to change transmission oil for Toyota Camry 2002 XLE?
actually, that is service center territory. the tranny fluid, come out, when the pan comes off to change the filter and square size gasket. there is a plastic plug for adding fluid, but the sight glass for proper level, is under the car ware you cannot see it from under the hood.
I am assuming it is an automatic. I am nor familiar with your car but you should know not all cars have drain plugs. The practice is to drop the pan which is held around the perimeter with small bolts--then the filter is replaced along with the fluid change. The fluid goes in where the stick goes.

  • Is changing the transmission oil nessasary on an older car that is an automatic?

ALL vehicles new or old, require maintenance. Usually around every 30,000 miles/50,000 kilometers give or take, depending on the vehicle manufacturer for the service you mention. Is changing the transmission oil nessasary on an older car that is an automatic?
Yes it is because trans fluid breaks down just like engine oil. This can cause slipping or long warm up times also locking up of the trans. I recommend 12,000 miles or at least once a year. Depends on how much you drive it.Is changing the transmission oil nessasary on an older car that is an automatic?
Use the maintenance schedule for the car. As the car gets older the needs for maintenance increase.
It is a must to change both the fluid and filter on the transmission not only on an older car.,

See your maintenance schedule or consult your trusted auto mechanic.

    Good luck.
In most cases no, but it does need changing if it is brown in color

    It smells burnt

It ( the trans) is slipping

Most trans fluid will last well over 100,000 miles
Thats like askin if a gallon of milk lasts forever! ALL fluids in an automobile need changing at some time or other!
yes every 50000 miles with a new filter . cost about 75 dollars at wal mart
Necessary not really! In fact I have seen it cause problems shifting if it has never been done, because the new fluid is ';thinner'; than the old fluid that was removed. The filter should be changes to help performance about every 50,000 miles. But again I have has some cars that I never did either to and have have gone over 100,000 miles.
yes if you want it to last
It's necessary on any automatic transmission, every 40 to 50,000 miles it should be changed along with the filter.
yes, but it's usually done at a greater number of miles than a motor oil change.(maybe at very 15,000 miles?)

And when you do a tranny fluid change, you also replace the tranny fluid filter.

The reason you need to do it is that small microscopic shards of metal build up inside the fluid. Also, the viscocity of the fluid begins to break down as well.

But, all the old cars I ever own leaked all of it's fluid, I never need to change it.

Should you change the manual transmission oil on VWs?

The service manager says they're sealed for life. Also, should you change the rear differential oil on VWs with 4Motion? I have a 2004 VW R32.Should you change the manual transmission oil on VWs?
You DO need to change the Haldex fluid every 20k miles on the R32. If you don't and the Haldex system goes out, it's extremely pricy to fix. As for the manual transmission oil, you will be fine. It will be changed when the clutch goes so don't worry about it.Should you change the manual transmission oil on VWs?
Transmission not sealed. It has a drain and fill plug.

I have a 1995 Passat w 180K. I changed the transmission oil at 100K. I feel it's better safe than sorry. Anyway, you're talking an hours worth of time and $25.00 for the oil.

As far as 4motion, can't help you.

(Service managers parrot what they have been told by the mfg.)
On most AUTOMATICS the tranny oil is supposed to be changed every 30K miles (100K miles for VW and Audi).

On Manual tranny, there is usually no recommended interval. But it doesn't hurt. I changed out the manual tranny oil in my Civic.

    Good Luck...
I have a 99 TDI Jetta, manual. The only time I ever changed the transmission oil is when I replaced the clutch.

Can't comment on your other question - no 4Motion for me.

    What kind of oil?

and how many quarts? How many quarts of transmission oil does 2003 Mitsubishi Montero need?
I've seen them take up to 7 quarts of ATF if the pan was removed and the filter replaced. Use Mitsubishi SP III ATF only! The level is checked with the transmission in neutral, not park. Make sure you have the vehicle at operating temperature when setting the final level. I'd start with 4 quarts, run it and check the level while cold. You will need to wait several minutes for the ATF to go down the dip stick tube after pouring in the ATF or you will get a false reading. Add ATF a 1/2 quart at a time if there is no ATF on the dipstick. Set the level to the cold mark and finale check it at operating temperature. Shift through the gears manually while driving and after the road test check the level again.

How do I add transmission oil to 2005 Honda Civic LX -its manual.?

I just don't know how to add the transmission oil to this car.How do I add transmission oil to 2005 Honda Civic LX -its manual.?
my advice...if you don't know how...have a professional do it. especially with something as important as the tranny. since its manual you have to access it from lower bay. but dont' get it confused with the oil drain plug...if you don't know what all this means, get a pro to do it. i'm not trying to offend you...i'm just a blunt person. How do I add transmission oil to 2005 Honda Civic LX -its manual.?
If you have a manual gearbox DO NOT add transmission oil.

Honda ';manual gearbox oil'; is available at the Honda dealer for about $5.

The gearbox is basically sealed and only needs attention according to the service intervals listed in your owner's manual as well as the instructions on how to check it or change it.

The gearbox is under the passenger side of the vehicle and you will see the drain and the filler hole for the gearbox.

One has a ';square'; fitting and the other which is above it, is 17mm.

If the fluid is original no space will exist to add more.

It is best to drain it and replace with fresh.

You will need a funnel with a long flexible neck.

My car has brown transmission oil, should i get it flushed before i go on a big trip?

Me and some friends are headed over to Lake Chelan state park for 9 days and i was thinking maybe i should drop 100 bucks on my car before i go. Because i live in western washington so i have to go over the mountains to get to lake chelan and haha i have a little Honda Prelude. My car has brown transmission oil, should i get it flushed before i go on a big trip?
Your proposed $100 investment will, no doubt, save you hundreds perhaps thousands in towing and repair bills.

Taking any trip in our cars requires that we have the car serviced beforehand to avoid any unforeseen pitfalls and breakdowns along the way.

This will also give you the piece-of-mind of knowing that your car is at it's optimal performance capability.

    *check fluids

    *check belts

    *check hoses

    *check tire pressure

Have a safe trip.My car has brown transmission oil, should i get it flushed before i go on a big trip?
YES. YOU PROBABLY HAVE BURNT TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THERE.
Transmission fluid starts out red, and through time develops that ';brown'; dirty color youve described. Unless your transmission has been slipping or youve noticed drops of fluid on your driveway, there no real indication that its going to fail on you. My suggestion is... its always good to keep your vehicle in the best condition possible to avoid road hazzards. If you feel that its important, and it will give you peace of mind on the road, go ahead with your instincts.
if u want to save your trans i would suggest u change the fluid and screen. u do have to replace the trans pan gasket when changing the screen.
Yes and filter. the pan has to come off so do filter.Change oil and anti freeze while in shop.
Yes - you need the fluid and filter changed. Your ATF should be pink to red in color.

It sounds like it's either never been replaced, or you've overheated the engine at some point.
tranny fluid should not be brown, get a total flush and fill asap.
yes you realy should get the Transmission flushed and a new Filter or you will blow your trans up really fast

    good luck
oh dear...get the oil replaced before you go, you may not have a gearbox soon...
i defiantly would and have a new filter installed too.. but make sure its a good shop that has a machine to do it and they just don't only change the fluid

  • How offten should I change the transmission oil in the 2004 honda civic sedan?

Check the owners manual and do it every time the owner's manual says to do it. I would recommend simply taking your Honda into the dealership or at least a Honda specializing shop for scheduled service. The important thing about Honda's is that you HAVE to keep up with regular maintenance or something will break down. I own 3 of them, and owned many before, my only regret on the one that actually broke down on me in the past was that i did not keep up with scheduled maintenance. The 3 new Honda's i have, i keep up with maintenance and have not had a single problem since.

Also after you reach a mileage that is past what your owners manual can recommend, (usually 120,000 miles or so) change your transmission fluid every 15,000 miles. This will help out your aging transmission a lot. Don't do a transmission flush though, not even the Honda dealership recommends that, it can actually damage your transmission. Just do a simple drain and refill, in fact in Honda's your supposed to drain it, refill it drive it for a bit, drain it again and refill it once more. If the fluid is still looking a little weird, do it once more. You gotta do it a couple times because when you drain it, you'll only let out about 3-4 quarts. The rest of it stays inside the transmission. That's why you drive it so it circulates again and then you can do another drain and refill. How offten should I change the transmission oil in the 2004 honda civic sedan?
it should be changed around every 30-40 thousand miles on it look in the owners manual and see what it says to do it at,i always change mine at or around 30-40 thousand, good luck. How offten should I change the transmission oil in the 2004 honda civic sedan?
    check the manual

2003 accent manual transmission how to change transmission oil?

I cant find where the transmission is or the meter that tells me if i need more fluid or not.2003 accent manual transmission how to change transmission oil?
there is no meter to it, you remove the fill plug and let it dribble out. if it does that it is full if not then you need to add.2003 accent manual transmission how to change transmission oil?
a manual transmission will not have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid. it may or may not have a fill and drain plug. odds are it doesnt. odds are it is a sealed crankcase, in which case, your gears are shot and you need to either swap trannies or start shifting from 3 to 5th like i said before
i think its one of the little rings going down into the engine. probably a dipstick with a red or yellow handle. or maybe its a tank more towards the windshield. im not sure. u want to try to get it to a dealer. because if you mess up your car is gone, buddy boy.
unbolt the thing let it drain to get all that **** out if you have an air gun it's faster and works better then bolt it up and you will see a bolt on the side of the transmission put the tranny fluid in where you took the bolt out

How/Where do i change transmission oil on a 72 VW bus?

it's an automatic transmission. there's a slight leak, so i'd like to add some fluid myself occasionally instead of waiting until last minute and paying a mechanic.How/Where do i change transmission oil on a 72 VW bus?
As with all automatics, it goes down the dipstick tube hole. Pull the dipstick out and with a long narrow funnel pour in the fluid. Take care not to overfill it. Put some in and wait a half hour , pull the stick, wipe off and try it. I know it is like pulling teeth. but the additional fluid may still be in the tube and it will mess up the reading as it smears all over the stick.How/Where do i change transmission oil on a 72 VW bus?
not sure about the bus but on the beetle (72) on the driver side there is a hex wrench stud on the transaxel about mid way down the trany that needs to be removed to check and add the oil.i do know to NOT OVERFILL IT. IT will BLOW the main seal and leak horribly. it leaks now probabley becouse the seal at the CV joint is bad.its easy to fix.
    Gotta pull the pan....

Why transmission oil changes so expensive?

The transmission oil sales in the store are under 10 bucks, but the oil change services in average charged 100 bucks. Is it a complicate job to do it?Why transmission oil changes so expensive?
we do flushes at our shops. I use 20 quarts of fluid when I do flush. I buy my fluid for 1.89/quart so times that by 20 and around $40 in fluid. I get $69.95 to do a flush. So I get around $30. Take me about a half hour plus cost of running a shop. Insurance, energy, wages, ect.. not too expensive after all deatils are wotrked out.Why transmission oil changes so expensive?
What car or truck are we talking about?

I like the bg services http://www.bgfindashop.com/
If your car is over 70k do not do it.

They will sell you trans service but actually the higher the mileage the worse it is on the transmission to change it.

It makes your cars transmission break down faster.

I have a shop and i don't do the trans service because i care about my customers cars. just add fluid if you need it
The places that sell the transmission flushing service, to me, are big rip offs. They claim to replace 100% of the fluid but they don't change the filter if it's an internal filter. I would rather take down the transmission pan to view what is sitting in the pan (sludge, metallic particles, etc.) and change the filter than just change the fluid. In fact, I've never been a great fan of changing tranny fluid. As another poster stated, it can cause more trans damage than prevent.

As to how to do it, go to your local library and find a repair manual for your car and read and understand what you have to do. Most cars have a pan that is held on with 10-20 bolts and an internal filter. Others, such as a 1995 Saturn SC-1 has a drain plug and a spin-on filter (like an engine oil filter).

If you decide to do it yourself, the most important part of the job is raising the vehicle. Don't just use a jack, use reliable jackstands or ramps to support the car before you get under.
Also to add on, it depends on the equipment they use too. It may even be more than 150 bucks.
Some vehicles require the removal of a crossmember to get the trans pan off. The filter AND gasket must be changed also.

A lot more oil AND work than a engine oil change.
Its a matter of removing about 10 bolts drain the fluid put the new gasket on and the reinstalling the pan oh don't forget to change the filter and adding new fluid
no they use about 10 quarts of fluid or more, also maybe a filter and gasket depending on type of trans

labor is about 40 bucks or so here

a honda cost about 70 bucks
