How do you know when your manual transmission gear oil is low?

you have to get underneath the car and take the plug out and stick your finger in the fill hole and see if you can feel fluid.How do you know when your manual transmission gear oil is low?
I guess what I would tell you is to do preventative maintenance and then you wouldn't ask this question. Every time you change oil, you unscrew the upper plug and see if you can touch the oil, sometimes I put a piece of wire in it to see if it touches the oil and if I see it on the piece of wire, its probably ok. But keep in mind this is a preventative measure, not after the fact thing.
If I remember correctly, there should be two square-headed plugs, one above the other. The bottom one is a drain, the top one (about halfway up) is the fill plug. Take out the top plug and pump transmission oil into it until it starts running out.
You physically check the level.


Any other symptom of low manual transmission oil, such as grinding, squealing, humming or other unusual noises may well be too late !
YOU DON'T UNLESS YOU CHECK THE LEVEL. TO DO THIS IS TO TAKE OUT THE OIL AND COMPARE IT WITH WHAT THE USER'S MANUAL INDICATES.
