Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?

99 CHEVY CAMARO(SS) bought it two years ago and ive put in it 10,000 miles but have never checked or added transmission oil, What exactly do i need to do, how do i check it, does the oil have to be hot/cold, does it have to be on park, neutral, reverse, on level ground and for my car what oil should i add.Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?
Oil should be warm so check after driving for at least 15 minutes. Check on level ground with engine running and transmission in park and emergency brake on. Pull dip stick, wipe it off and reinsert fully. Remove within 2-3 seconds and check level. If need to add, do only a small amt at a time, as you do not want to overfill. For correct oil check your owners manual or ask at any auto parts store for correct fluid to use. some are universal and some are for GM cars only.Step by step: How do you check transmission oil?
First, go to a JiffyLube and let them check it for you, for free. Then go look in your owners manual and it will tell you how to do this on your own. Why you want to check it yourself when it is free elsewhere, and you don't even have to get out of the car or get your fingers dirty.
look on the dipstick, it will probably tell you it needs to be in neutural (set the park brake) with the vehicle warm
engine should be warmed up...run through all the gears including reverse...put in park or neutral and pull dipstick...wipe off and put back in..carefully dont force it...pull out and look...oil should be nice red not brown or burnt..go to any parts store and they will sell u dex gm oil/fluid.....some newer cars have no dipstick...fluid checked by plug on side of tranny...check with parts/service dept...they r happy to help...really
Run the engine to bring the temp up, run it through all the gears, park on level ground. With engine running and parking brake on, open the hood and remove dipstick, wipe off excess and return to tube. Remove dipstick again and note fluid level. If needed add fluid through dipstick tube until brought to FULL mark.

Caution:

It is worse to have too much than not enough, in most cases.

On some vehicles, there is no dipstick, the owners' manual stating that the Dealer must perform this operation.
step one park on level ground step two put the car in park step three start the car step four check the transmission fluid
First of all, do not go to Jiffy Lube!!!!!!! they are specifically trained to change engine oil. drive the vehicle until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, park the car on a level surface, then run through the gears and back to park. Most transmissions are checked in park hot some are checked in neutral, pull the dipstick and examine the fluid, it should be pink, red indicates older fluid, brown indicates old or overheated fluid or deteriorating tranny usually clutch material, black is burnt fluid and indicative of problems. clean off the fluid, examine the dipstick for the full/low markings and the check statement as to in park or neutral, if neutral, put on the parking brake and shift to neutral then slowly put in the dipstick completely until seated for a second or two and remove. the level should be on or near the full mark (DO NOT OVERFILL), the first low mark is usually one pint or half a quart. If low, make sure you add only the fluid recommended in the owners manual, unless the transmission has been overhauled then check the invoice to see what fluid was used. Late model vehicles have a wide variety of fluids and they do not mix.
