How many quarts of transmission oil does 2003 Mitsubishi Montero need?

What kind of oil?

I've seen them take up to 7 quarts of ATF if the pan was removed and the filter replaced. Use Mitsubishi SP III ATF only! The level is checked with the transmission in neutral, not park. Make sure you have the vehicle at operating temperature when setting the final level. I'd start with 4 quarts, run it and check the level while cold. You will need to wait several minutes for the ATF to go down the dip stick tube after pouring in the ATF or you will get a false reading. Add ATF a 1/2 quart at a time if there is no ATF on the dipstick. Set the level to the cold mark and finale check it at operating temperature. Shift through the gears manually while driving and after the road test check the level again.
