Why transmission oil changes so expensive?

The transmission oil sales in the store are under 10 bucks, but the oil change services in average charged 100 bucks. Is it a complicate job to do it?Why transmission oil changes so expensive?
we do flushes at our shops. I use 20 quarts of fluid when I do flush. I buy my fluid for 1.89/quart so times that by 20 and around $40 in fluid. I get $69.95 to do a flush. So I get around $30. Take me about a half hour plus cost of running a shop. Insurance, energy, wages, ect.. not too expensive after all deatils are wotrked out.Why transmission oil changes so expensive?

If your car is over 70k do not do it.


They will sell you trans service but actually the higher the mileage the worse it is on the transmission to change it.

The places that sell the transmission flushing service, to me, are big rip offs. They claim to replace 100% of the fluid but they don't change the filter if it's an internal filter. I would rather take down the transmission pan to view what is sitting in the pan (sludge, metallic particles, etc.) and change the filter than just change the fluid. In fact, I've never been a great fan of changing tranny fluid. As another poster stated, it can cause more trans damage than prevent.





As to how to do it, go to your local library and find a repair manual for your car and read and understand what you have to do. Most cars have a pan that is held on with 10-20 bolts and an internal filter. Others, such as a 1995 Saturn SC-1 has a drain plug and a spin-on filter (like an engine oil filter).





If you decide to do it yourself, the most important part of the job is raising the vehicle. Don't just use a jack, use reliable jackstands or ramps to support the car before you get under.
Also to add on, it depends on the equipment they use too. It may even be more than 150 bucks.
Some vehicles require the removal of a crossmember to get the trans pan off. The filter AND gasket must be changed also.





A lot more oil AND work than a engine oil change.
Its a matter of removing about 10 bolts drain the fluid put the new gasket on and the reinstalling the pan oh don't forget to change the filter and adding new fluid
