Can you put transmission oil instead of power steeling oil?

Every time i take a turn my steering wheel made a noise. My ex looked and said i needed power steeling oil. If i couldnt find power steeling oil, putting transmission oil would be ok. So i bought transmission oil (owner's manual).... but now im afraid he was wrong. Is this true? Can you put transmission oil instead of power steeling oil?
That depends on your make %26amp; model.

All cars used to use the same fluid for both transmissions and power steering. However, there was a change some time ago, and the specifications for the fluids currently are different. Transmission fluid in a power steering system in newer cars may damage your power steering pump.

Check your owner's manual, and add whatever it says you should use, or call a dealer service department and see if they can tell you what the proper fluid is.Can you put transmission oil instead of power steeling oil?
I dont know where the other users got there ';opinions'; at *I love when ppl scream NO DONT DO IT to something they dont know about* but yes you can use transmission fluid in your power steering with no problems.. the back of the transmission fluid bottle even states it can be used this way. My question to you tho is if you went to pick up transmission fluid for this.. why didnt you just get power steering fluid instead? If you found tranny fluid they most likely have power steering fluid as well. Getting back to it in short tho... yes transmission fluid CAN be used with no side effects.. just read the back of the bottle you bought :)
There may instances when ATF can be used but most newer cars should have regular ps fluid used in fact Honda Mercedes,Audi and some others use a special fluid all there own. Brand specific for there car make. You have to use approved fluid in them not even reg PS fluid can be used no matter what you are told as repair on these imports is very very expensive if the WRONG fluid is used.
Its true, you ';can'; use it. But you can also use water instead of milk with your Frosted Flakes... The major thing to consider here is the viscosity of the fluid. (the car not the cereal)

Just get the recomended stuff.
I agree with using trans fluid and steering fluid interchangably (they virtually identical fluids)

However you did not say what kind of car- very late model cars CAN(not always) use a different fluid...

BUT I'll tell you right now 99.9% of cars are just fine using transmission fluid.
NO, don't do it. Go to Autozone or a place like that. They sell power steering fluid.

Older cars there's not much of a problem with it, but newer cars don't do as well....why chance it, go with the correct stuff.
NO!

Never put incorrect lubricant into a system, you can permanently damage or destroy it. Power steering fluid and transmission oil have different characteristics and are not interchangeable.
Yes you can . It wont destroy the pump, as a matter of fact it might help it. Trans fluid has conditioners in it to help with sludge build up.
NO, you do not want to do that my uncle done that i messed it up

and had to change it.
in some cars, you can use tranny oil. it depends on the car, some you can, some you cant.
Yes it is OK to use transmission fluid in your power steering. Almost everyone in the world does it.
LMAO theres a reason why they have two separate oils. but yea ur ex is a idiot, good thing u broke up with him rite?!
Just adding another yes to the answers. Have been doing it for over 30 years with no problems.
WORKS IN OLDER CARS
