Is it necessary to change transmission oil and filter?

Got an '89 Nissan truck approaching 100,000 miles. A guy who owns a repair shop (for 40 years) told me he'd do it for around $100, but that with the modern trans oils it not necessary if the oil looks good. That's it's basically a scam for car dealers to make more money. Is it necessary to change transmission oil and filter?
THAT PRICE ISN'T THAT BAD IF IT INCLUDES PARTS AND LABOR...WITH THE MILEAGE THAT YOU HAVE I WOULD RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM FLUSHED...A SIMPLE FILTER CHANGE ONLY REMOVES THE OLD FLUID IN THE PAN WHILE 80% OF THE OLD TRANNY FLUID IS STILL IN THE SYSTEM...AND AS FAR AS THE FLUID LOOKING GOOD THING GOES...THAT'S NEITHER HERE NOR THERE...WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ROUTINE MAINTENANCE...FRICTION PARTS WITHIN YOUR TRANNY WEAR DOWN OVER TIME AND GET TRAPPED BY THE FILTER AND IF THE FILTER IS DOING IT'S JOB, OF COURSE THE FLUID IS GONNA LOOK GOOD...THE PROBLEM IS WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FLUID PRESSURE WITHIN YOUR TRANNY...WHAT HAPPENS TO A SHOWER HEAD WHEN IT GET CLOGGED...THE PRESSURE DROPS...YOUR TRANNY WORKS DIRECTLY OFF OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE AND LOWER THAN NORMAL PRESSURE CAN EFFECT YOUR TRANNY'S PERFORMANCE AND LEAD TO EXPENSIVE REPAIRS...I'VE REBUILT TONS OF TRANSMISSIONS WHO'S FLUID LOOKED GREAT BUT THE FILTER WAS TOTALLY PLUGGED...GET A SECOND OPINION AND GOOD LUCK.Is it necessary to change transmission oil and filter?
fluid and filter should be change every fill up
Yes and oil and filter change is the minimum maintenance recommended to keep your car from incurring additional and more costly repairs. You do this every 5,000 km's or 3-4 months, whichever is sooner.

With regard to changing the transmission oil, I do this every 2 years.

Best of luck.....P.S. 100.00 seems reasonable when I pay 39.95 for an oil/filter change.
i believe that it is necessary to change both because no matter what the filter makes the fluid look good. it ';filters'; the metal shavings and dirt and such from the fluid. would you change your oil but not the filter?
it' good for a older car to have the trans oils and filter changed

i had my 1990 Dodge Omni trans oils and filter changed this year for $150 so yeah $100 is good and changing it will help your trans life last longer

good luck
Well I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a scam (just normal maintenance), but yes, you can totally wait. but check the condition of your fluid to be sure first. I have many cars over 100K and the engine usually dies before the tranny goes out from not changing oil. Your biggest concern should be developing leaks, if the oil level goes down you will cause wear to the tranny and that's what will cause damage.

I would not change it at this point (but then I am not known for keeping my cars in tip top condition), but then, cars that live the longest are properly maintained, $100 is not that much.
advisable at each 50.000 mile interval
