Is transmission oil supposed to smell burnt if the transmission is burnt?

Burnt trans fluid will be dark or black in color and has a burnt smell. This is caused by band and clucth friction material failure, it has been slipping and over heating, accompanied by a shifting problem ,a seriuos damage has ocurred. Is transmission oil supposed to smell burnt if the transmission is burnt?

Transmission fluid should never smell burnt, your tranny is overheating, or stuck in the wrong gear. I'm not sure what you mean by a burnt transmission, they do get warm but they should never get warm enough to burn or start cooking the tranny fluid. Some transmissions (On newer cars and imports) have a cooling jacket that actually runs water through it and back to the radiator to help cool the transmission. If they get plugged the tranny will run hot. But burnt transmission fluid is not a good sign.
